Necrology
Fr. Venard Helget (1913-2000)
Father Venard was a gifted pianist if not a genius at the keyboard. He earned a Masters in Music at Columbia University. In addition he studied at Julliard and The Pius X School of Music in New York, N.Y., as well.
Fr. Isidore Smith (1899-1952)
Once shortly before his death Father Isidore told one of the clerics who served his morning Mass that he had preached a lot of sermons on hope, but now that he was failing he realized that he put out a lot of good theory and now that at his present state of health he had to put his words into practice!
Br. Wolfgang Wolf (1868-1942)
Brother Wolfgang, one of three “ Wolves” in our community along with Abbot Innocent and Father Ferdinand, like them, was born in Germany, he in 1868. He entered the novitiate of the abbey in 1895 and made vows the following year.
Br. John Kaighin (1944-2002)
Brother John died on January 10 of a heart attack while gathering firewood. His heart was weakened also by type-one diabetes; he had medicated since being a teenager.
Fr. Maurus Kennedy (1896-1985)
Father Maurus was an “Okie” along with Father Boniface Moll. He came to Atchison and St. Benedict’s High School in 1911, attended St. Benedict’s College, 1915-1921, and the Abbey School of Theology until 1925 when he was ordained June 6. He had professed his first monastic vows July 2, 1919.
Fr. Conrad Pillar (1921-2001)
James Pillar entered St. Andrew’s Abbey, Cleveland, Ohio, after attending Benedictine High School there. He took the name Anselm and as Frater Anselm came to St. Benedict’s College. He transferred his stability to St. Benedict’s Abbey and made solemn vows here July 11, 1946.
Fr. Gervase Burke (1901-1965)
A devotee of the comic strip character, Popeye, and a recipient of an original message from Popeye’s cartoonist, E.E. Segar, Father Gervase Burke died of cancer.
Br. Anthony Eckstaller (1885-1946)
Anton Eckstaller entered St. Benedict’s Abbey, April 13, 1913. As Brother Anthony he made his profession May 14, 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War I. He held many jobs in the community. With a special permit necessary during Prohibition, he purchased the Mass wine for the abbey and dispensed it.
Fr. Columban Meaney (1855-1911)
As he left the chapel at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Kansas City, Kan., Father Columban died of apoplexy. He had been in the hospital for two months doctoring for pleurisy. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and began attendance at St. Benedict’s College in 1880. In 1882 he made vows as a member of the abbey and was ordained December 21, 1886.
Br. Matthew Meager (1883-1965)
Brother Matt, as he was known to the community, came to from St, Joseph’s of the Valley Parish in western Leavenworth County, Kan. He pronounced his monastic vows, December 28, 1923. The community was then living in what is now Farrell Hall.
Fr. Henry Deters (1928-1996)
Father Henry was diagnosed with cancer in September 1995 and had returned to the abbey from being pastor of St. Mary’s, St. Benedict, St. Bede, Kelly, and St. Patrick’s, Corning, all in Nemaha County.
Fr. Andrew Green (1865-1950)
In June 1915 Father Andrew was the “first Kansan to celebrate his silver jubilee (of ordination) after 25 years of continuous labor in his native state.” This quote was taken from a local paper. He was born in Marak, Kan., near Everest, and professed as a monk of St. Benedict’s Abbey in 1885 and later ordained priest in 1890.
