Fr. Benedict Kappler (1874-1958)
Father Benedict was born in Chicago October 30, 1874. His mother was Gertrude Wolf, sister of Abbot Innocent Wolf and of Father Ferdinand. He came to St. Benedict’s at the age of 9 and actually made his First Communion here. He holds the record of continuous attendance on campus that extended from 1884-1999—from elementary school to theology. He made first vows July 11, 1893, and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Fink June 21, 1899.
Even as a student, then Frater Benedict taught German, penmanship, and Music. He later was assistant at St. Benedict’s Parish, Kansas City, Kan. He had consecutive assignments at St. Patrick’s, Atchison County, St. Mary’s, Purcell, and St. Benedict’s, Bendena. In 1932 he was appointed Chaplain for St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged in St. Charles, Mo. He served there faithfully until illness forced his return to the abbey January 1, 1956. Father Benedict was secretary to various Directors of the College, bursar for four years and registrar.
Father Benedict Kappler passed away April 8, 1958.
