The St. Benedict Chair in Liturgy was established on May 26, 2015 by the monks of St. Benedict's Abbey. Your investment to the St. Benedict Chair in Liturgy supports Fr. Daniel McCarthy’s research and teaching on modern liturgy in Rome and beyond. Father Daniel has been appointed to teach Liturgy at the Pontifical Institute of Liturgy located at the Benedictine house of studies in Rome.
Pope John XXIII and his successors have entrusted teaching Liturgy in Rome to the Benedictines. St. Benedict’s Abbey has contributed our first scholar to this world-wide Benedictine project of teaching Liturgy in the name of the Holy Father to students who come from around the world to Rome to study at the Master’s and doctoral level. Contributing Fr. Daniel to this task comes at a cost to our abbey of a monk who could otherwise earn a wage and contribute to our life at home. Furthermore, publishing academic books does produce a profit.
Your support of Fr. Daniel’s teaching in Rome and his publishing projects will support the Abbey directly. The endowment of the St. Benedict Chair in Liturgy is held by the monks in Atchison and is used to pay the expenses and to offer a salary to the abbey for the work of Fr. Daniel. Please consider a contribution to support Fr. Daniel’s publishing books and teaching Liturgy in Rome.
Father Daniel McCarthy has been named the first chair holder. This will enable him to continue teaching liturgy at the master’s level at the Liturgy Institute, London, and to continue writing on liturgy, the Latin language and church architecture. He has authored over 270 articles and co-authored or edited three books, with other books in press. Some of Fr. Daniel's work is available in our shop.
You are invited to invest with the Abbey and Father Daniel by your donation to the St. Benedict Chair in Liturgy to establish a lasting endowment, whose funds will support teaching, research and publishing. The Abbey is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Your donation may be tax deductible in the United States.
