Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Director of Abbey Health Services (AHS), the Nurses’s Aide provides care for the individual infirm monks in accordance with care plans on an assigned shift. The Aide will utilize accepted standards of safety in all phases of designated duties. They will follow objectives and policies as well as nursing protocols set forth by AHS.
Essential Functions:
Follows established performance standards and performs duties according to nursing service policies and procedures.
Reports changes in residents’ conditions, unusual problems, or incidents to the Director of AHS and to the Aide coming on to the floor at shift changes.
Conducts rounds as designated for the given shift.
Responsible for the safety of residents under his/her supervision.
Identifies safety hazards and emergency situations, initiating corrective action.
Assumes personal responsibility for following procedures related to control of equipment and supplies within AHS.
Documents care provided throughout the shift and any response or lack of response to the care provided.
Gives care to all monks as needed and answers call lights.
Takes monks needing assistance to the refectory, serves trays, offers snacks, and assists with feeding as needed.
Follows toileting plan and changes incontinent residents as needed.
Completes personal hygiene check of monks as needed – disposing of any bedpans, washbasins, or soiled linens as needed.
Does laundry of individual monks confined to bed and chair as instructed or more frequently if the situation warrants.
Provides care for residents with catheters and colostomy bags as needed.
Regards each monk as an individual and respects his privacy.
Consistently works cooperatively with members of the Abbey community, colleagues, physicians, families, and members of the general public.
Works as scheduled and consistently demonstrates dependability and punctuality.
Finds own replacement for shift if absent.
Marginal Functions:
Participates in facility in-services as assigned.
Participates in resident care conferences and other facility meetings as assigned.
Perform other related duties as directed.
Position Requirements:
Expected to have acquired the necessary skills and information to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.
High school diploma or GED. Must maintain CNA certification from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction of varying detail.
Ability to perform basic CNA skills and identify change in resident condition.
Expected to make good clinical judgement in regard to resident condition. and report unusual condition and behavior to the Director of AHS.
Maintain good relationships with monks, family members, other staff members, and the public.
Ability to move, sit, stand, bend, and lift intermittently throughout the workday. Ability to lift 75 pounds. Must pass job related physical and substance abuse screening.
Ability to read and comprehend facility policies and procedures.
Ability to protect confidential information, be attentive for extended periods of time, work under distracting conditions, and utilize good judgement. Ability to adapt to different people, behavior and circumstances and remain calm under stress and anger.
This job involves heavy lifting and exposure to blood borne pathogens.
